1st Surf Outing for 2015

1/20/2015

Nothing earth shattering for the 1st outing for 2015. But, we did get out and we did get a fish to hand.  When I say we, I mean Joel.  I still smell like skunk for 2015. Surf=1, Pete=0. There is nothing better than getting the skunk off a new fisher.  Took Joel out on his first ever surf fly fishing adventure.  He got a fish to hand.  Granted it wasn't a wall mounter, but he got to see what my addiction is all about.  Brought his first Barred Surf Perch to hand.  Always amazes me how aggressive these Perch are.  Fly was almost as big as the fish.  I guess when you live to those conditions you grab what looks good and decide if its food later ;-)

Like I said, not a wall mounter, but considering the early morning conditions and never slinging a 13' Spey rod with a  33'T11 shooting head, in the surf Joel did a great job.  After about 20 minutes of me walking him through the basics (which I am not good at) he was popping 60'+ casts.  Some of you big guns are probably thinking only 60'?  Remember we weren't tossing line on a flat lake or small surf with a long interval between waves.  Matter of fact I was a bit surprised how much wind we had at sunrise.  Usually we don't get the prevailing winds to kick up until a bit later.  Not to mention the swell was a thick strong swell with a heavy undertow.  Just about dumped me on my backside. This brings up a safety message for the central coast surf.  One minute you are in knee deep water and the next its close to chest high.  Don't get tunnel vision, pay close attention to the surf at all times.  Rip tides will show up without any warning in any depth of water.

Joel, consider this new addiction as payback for getting me hooked on archery.  Joel is one of the owners of the newest archery shop on the central coast.  Best shop you will ever find.  Good products and even better people.  Give Central Coast Archery a look, if you get to San Luis Obispo. www.centralcoastarchery.com

Guess I found another reason to build a backup surf rod...... introducing new folks to fishing the central coast surf with a fly rod.  Just have to get a heavy enough setup for them.  I used my 5wt with a sinking line and was way under gunned for the wind and swell.

Until next time my friends,
Pete
